The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has announced the preliminary results of Iraq’s provincial council elections, held on 31 January 2009. The results include approximately 90% of 7.5 million votes counted across 14 provinces. The results do not include the votes of around 700,000 soldiers, police officers, hospital patients and prison inmates who cast their votes in a special round of voting. Official results are expected within two weeks.
